COOMLOUGHRA HORSESHOE
For the ultimate adventure, embark on a trek that takes you to the top of Ireland’s three highest peaks—Carrauntoohil, Beenkeragh, and Caher—all within a single day. This challenging hike combines intense trekking with the thrill of scrambling across knife-edge rocky ridges, offering an unforgettable experience for seasoned hikers.
Starting Point: Hydro Car Park
Unlike other routes to Carrauntoohil's summit, this trek begins at the Hydro Car Park. From here, hikers journey into the stunning Coomloughra Valley, passing by the picturesque loughs of Eighter, Coomloughra, and Eagher, which provide fresh water to much of the region. This serene start quickly transitions into a more demanding ascent.
The Ascent: Scrambling to Beenkeragh
Your first major challenge is reaching the summit of Beenkeragh, which demands strong scrambling skills. The route is steep and rugged, making it a true test of endurance and agility. Once you conquer Beenkeragh, prepare yourself for the narrow, exposed ridge that connects to Carrauntoohil—the highest peak in Ireland.
The Final Challenge: Caher
Though Caher ranks as the third highest mountain in Ireland, don’t underestimate it. The trek from Carrauntoohil to Caher is far from easy, with steep inclines and rocky terrain. However, the sense of accomplishment as you complete the trio of peaks makes every effort worthwhile.
Descent: Returning to the Valley
After summiting Caher, you’ll descend back into the Coomloughra Valley, completing one of Ireland’s most demanding and rewarding hikes. This trek is not for the faint-hearted, but for those who dare to take it on, the views and the sense of achievement are unparalleled.
